Homemade Taco Seasoning

I have been doing a lot of recipe investigating lately. Mostly, I have been looking for good recipes to use in a new experiment I am trying out on my family: bulk cooking. (But that's another post for a different day!)

I just found a recipe to make bulk taco seasoning. It came out wonderful, and was SO aromatic. Best of all, it is much cheaper than buying those 'little packets' AND it has spices only! No nasty preservatives or additives to keep it fresh or make it salty. It is also safe for my gluten free friends!

I procrastinated making it for so long, because it seemed so much easier to just buy packets when they were called for, but after seeing how quick and easy it was to mix up a huge batch of taco seasoning, and then just pack it away for whenever it's needed....I am convinced that I will never buy 'little packets' of taco seasoning again!

First, assemble your ingredients.....

Then mix them together in a large bowl:

Lastly, store your mix in an airtight container. I chose to put it in a zipper bag, only because I planned on using it up pretty quickly. But you could also use an empty glass jar, rinsed and recycled from your groceries! Baby food jars work well also.

And now...for the recipe:

Bulk Taco Seasoning

24 TBS chili powder
20 TBS paprika
18 TBS cumin
10 TBS onion powder
2 TBS garlic powder
1.5 Tsp cayenne pepper
4 TBS salt
2 Tsp pepper

(Feel free to adjust the amounts according to your taste. In our house, we really like garlic, and we also like hot and spicy, so I slightly increased the garlic and cayenne)

Measure all the spices into a large bowl, and thoroughly mix them. Store in an airtight container.

7 teaspoons of this mix is equivalent to 1 packet of taco seasoning, if you are using a recipe that calls for "a packet".
